Lung function
Lung-function testing assesses the airways and lungs and is used to monitor respiratory treatment. It is indicated for symptoms such as shortness of breath, persistent cough or sputum. Early changes in the airways can often be detected so that treatment can be started in time.
How is the examination performed?
The examination is painless. In simple spirometry you breathe through a mouthpiece into the device while a clip closes the nose. On instruction you breathe quietly, then inhale deeply and exhale forcefully so that volume and flow can be measured. Depending on the scope, the examination takes about 10 minutes. What can it show?
Lung-function testing provides information on many airway and lung diseases:
- Bronchial asthma and narrowed airways
- COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and lung hyperinflation
- reduced lung compliance (restrictive disorders)
How accurate is the examination?
Lung-function testing is a standardised, reproducible method and a core part of airway diagnostics. Repeated measurements – for example before and after a bronchodilator spray – can show whether airway narrowing (obstruction) is reversible.
