Thyroid ultrasound
The thyroid is well suited to ultrasound because it is easily accessible in the neck. Even small nodules can be detected, and causes of over- or underfunction can be investigated.
How is the examination performed?
You lie on your back with the head slightly tilted back so that the neck is accessible. After applying gel, the probe is moved gently over the front of the neck. The examination uses ultrasound waves, is painless and uses no X-rays. Within a few minutes we obtain a clear image of the size, position and structure of the thyroid. No special preparation is required.
What can it show?
- Nodules and cysts – often from only a few millimetres in size
- an enlargement (goitre) or a reduction in thyroid size
- signs of inflammation of the thyroid
- possible causes of over- or underfunction
- features that help distinguish benign from suspicious nodules
How accurate is the examination?
Ultrasound is the main imaging method for the thyroid and can detect even very small changes. It is often combined with laboratory tests of thyroid hormones so that function and structure can be assessed together. If suspicious nodules are found, further tests (for example scintigraphy) can be arranged if appropriate.
